Apprentice joiner wins award

An apprentice joiner from Doncaster has won a Student of the Year award for his hard work at college.

Scott Marsden, 20, of Balby, an apprentice at St Leger Homes of Doncaster, the organisation that manages around 21,000 homes for Doncaster Council, clinched student of the year for carpentry and joinery NVQ Level 2 at Doncaster College.

Marsden, who has worked at St Leger Homes for the last two years and studied on day release, is now hoping to win the same accolade next year when he completes his studies for NVQ Level 3.

Marsden, who won a trophy, plaque and a case of top quality screws worth £40, said: “I was so pleased when I found out I had won the award. I feel it is a reward for the hard work I have put into the course. I’d love to win it next year too because the prize is likely to be a load of new tools.”

Susan Jordan, chief executive of St Leger Homes of Doncaster, said: “I am so pleased that Scott has won this award. Apprentices are so important to St Leger Homes. Besides completing their apprenticeship they also work for nationally recognised qualifications and combined with the hands on work they develop excellent trades skills and confidence.”
