Barratt and HCA get go ahead for Gloucestershire green village

Barratt Developments and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) have received planning permission to build what has been billed as England's first large-scale zero-carbon development in South Gloucestershire.

The Hanham Hall eco-village, designed by HTA Architects, will see 195 zero-carbon homes built.

Barratt said it is the first large-scale development in England to be built to level 6 of the code for sustainable homes, the code's highest level.

The development is part of the Carbon Challenge run by the HCA, the national housing and regeneration agency.

Construction work is due to start by the end of 2009 with the first homes to be completed by 2010.
