Cash boost for Sheffield independent living scheme

A popular support group that helps older people live independently at home in the north of Sheffield is celebrating a cash boost.

Foxhill & Birley Carr Live at Home scheme has won £2,318 from Sheffield Homes to help it continue providing services.

The aim of the scheme is to support the elderly, isolated and vulnerable in the community by offering activities – with a door-to-door transport service – that help maintain their independence, health and mental well-being.

Almost 50 people aged between 64 and 96 make use of the scheme’s services, which include a lunch club that provides home-cooked hot meals, a range of activities – including games, crafts, knitting, bingo, beetle drives, and quizzes – and excursions out for pub lunches and day trips.

The Live at Home scheme also provides practical support for its members by signposting them to services that can help if they have any problems.

The scheme, which has run for 15 years, is a vital lifeline for people who live on their own and want to get out of the house for social events and activities.

As well as serving Foxhill, Birley Carr and Parson Cross, members who are able to travel make their own way from neighbouring areas to attend the lunch club.

The Foxhill and Birley Carr Live at Home scheme runs under the umbrella of MHA – a registered charity that provides services for older people throughout the country – but relies on independent fundraising to keep going. Members pay a small contribution towards transport and activities.

Manager Louise Dyson is supported by a cook and a team of 18 enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers, who do a fantastic job. The scheme would not operate without all their hard work and time they give.

She said: “Many of our members wouldn’t get out and meet other people if it wasn’t for this scheme – I know it makes a difference to people’s lives.

“People are living longer now and they do get lonely if they are stuck in the house all day.

"By coming along to our lunch clubs they make new friends, socialise, get some mental stimulation, and gentle physical exercise when we go on trips.

“Everyone gets along really well and we have a great team here – it’s a pleasure to be the manager. This funding is most welcome as we have to find our own money to keep going.”

“This scheme provides a fantastic service to the community it serves and is an excellent example of how the little things you do for others can make a big difference to people’s lives,” said Surjan Tiwana, north area manager for Sheffield Homes.

“We know the funding we have provided will be put to good use helping the elderly and vulnerable in the north of Sheffield.”

Lunch clubs take place at Christ Church Hall, Halifax Road, Birley Carr, on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 12noon and 2.30pm for people aged 60 and over.
