Cheshire not switched on for digital switch over

12th June 2009

Viewers in Cheshire are the most unaware of when the digital switchover takes place, a survey of television viewers across the Granada region (Cheshire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester) has revealed.

TVonics, the Stockport based digital set top box provider asked respondents if they knew when the digital switchover takes place in the Granada TV region. Of those respondents in Cheshire, a staggering 80 per cent said they didn’t know when it takes place.

The response in Cheshire of those who don’t know when switchover takes place is higher than the region’s average result; 62 per cent of respondents across all three counties said they were unaware of the date for switchover, whilst the remaining 38 per cent said they were aware.

By comparison, of the respondents in Merseyside, 69 per cent didn’t know when the switchover takes place and 31 per cent said they did. However, Greater Manchester was the most aware with 57 per cent stating they knew when the switchover was due to happen.

“The switchover in the Granada region will take place on the 4th November 2009 for BBC2 and 3rd December for the rest of the ‘terrestrial’ channels - but its fast approaching and it’s worrying that the message hasn’t reached the people of Cheshire yet,” said Carl Butler, Group Managing Director, TVonics.

“If people have older TV’s without the Freeview channels, they can convert their TV to digital with a set top box – there’s no need to go and buy a new TV and consign the old one to the scrap heap.”
