CIH backs call to tackle tenancy fraud

The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) has welcomed the Audit Commission’s report Protecting the Public Purse and its call for more social landlords to show a clear commitment to tackling tenancy fraud.

CIH’s Making Best Use of Stock (MBUS) team, funded by the Department of Communities and Local Government, is supporting local authorities and registered providers to tackle unlawful subletting. It works with social landlords cost free to share good practice and assist at a strategic level on all aspects of tenancy fraud.

Grainia Long, CIH interim chief executive, said: “The report highlights the continuing problem of tenancy fraud, and we welcome its clear message that more needs to be done. Tenancy fraud prevents people in need from getting access to social housing and is a huge drain on our national resources. Our team will continue to help landlords root out and eliminate tenancy fraud and free up homes for households who genuinely need them.”
