City West Housing Trust executives wield hammers at Barton Village

City West’s chief executive, Tim Doyle, and director of asset management, Colette McKune, lend a hand at Barton Village

City West Housing Trust executives swapped the boardroom for the building site as work on its £14.3 million eco Barton Village project continues at pace.

Chief executive, Tim Doyle, and director of asset management, Colette McKune, wielded sledgehammers to help gut the inside of Engels House; the first of four tower blocks City West is regenerating in Eccles.

Planning permission to transform 236 homes that date back to the 1960s was granted at the start of the year and internal clearing work has been taking place since by Bullock Construction in preparation for the major overhaul of tenants’ homes.

A wide-range of the latest energy efficient products will be retro-fitted helping reduce tenants’ fuel bills and cut carbon emissions.

Tim Doyle, chief executive said: “Work on the site is moving forward at a good pace and it was nice to be able to lend a hand and see just what goes into the preparation works before the homes are fitted with the new products and equipment.

“Once completed, Engels House and the three other high rise blocks that make up Barton Village, will feature the latest, most energy efficient products available playing a huge role in addressing fuel poverty and the green agenda.

“Just as importantly, the village will also be developed for the wider community so the neighbourhood reflects the quality of tenants’ homes and will give everyone in the area a tremendous boost.”

The regeneration work will see the blocks, apartments and surrounding grounds receiving a comprehensive makeover from top to bottom, with Engels House expected to be completed in February 2012.
