Contractor appointed for Black Country extra care scheme

Midlands Heart has appointed Frank Haslam Milan (FHM) as the contractor for a multi-million pound, extra care housing scheme in Dudley.

FHM, which was selected following a competitive tender, was chosen because of its extensive experience in large construction projects and existing extra care build portfolio.

The independent-living apartment complex, located on Whitehouse Street in Coseley, will consist of 72 units, offering a mix of one and two-bedroom properties for rent and shared ownership.

The scheme is one of five developments planned for the Black Country and forms part of Dudley Council’s extra care housing strategy which highlights the need for high quality, safe accommodation. Last month work began on Dudley’s first extra care scheme located off Middlepark Road in the Russells Hall area of the town.

Residents of both schemes will have access to on-site communal leisure areas, incorporating a restaurant, bar, shop, fitness centre, craft and activity suite, library and a greenhouse.

Carl Larter, director of new business and development at Midland Heart, said: “We are delighted to have FHM on board as the main contractor, and this appointment marks an important step in delivering a high quality, extra care development for Dudley’s over 55s.

“The Whitehouse Street extra care scheme is a great way of making sure that people stay independent and receive quality care. Giving people the chance to stay in their own home, keep control of their own lives and become part of a thriving community, is a way of life we feel totally passionate about at Midland Heart.”

Work is due to start on the site this month with completion scheduled for summer 2011.
