Donation means ex soldier moves closer to Paralympic dream

Craig receives the cheque from Brenda James, secretary of the Latin Gardens/Emley Drive Tenants’ and Residents’ Association (TARA) surrounded by other TARA members.

An injured former soldier is a step closer to his Paralympic dream, thanks to a £300 donation from tenants and residents in Doncaster.

Craig Wood, 20, who lost his legs and a hand in a bomb blast in Afghanistan in 2009, received the money from members of Latin Gardens and Emley Drive Tenants’ and Residents’ Association (TARA) who raised the money by holding an autumn fayre.

All TARAs are supported by St Leger Homes of Doncaster – the organisation that manages just under 21,000 homes for Doncaster Council.

Wood, of Doncaster, has an ambition of being part of the 2016 sailing team for the Paralympics which will be held in Rio De Janiero. He is already in the transitional Paralympic squad and has set his sight on making the first team.

The money will buy him a tactical sailing compass.

He said: “This is a great boost and will help buy some of the specialist equipment that I need to go on and achieve my dream.”
