Green light for Barrowcliff regeneration

Residents from the Barrowcliff Estate in Scarborough are celebrating the start of a five-year regeneration project which will see their neighbourhood transformed.

The My Barrowcliff initiative – which is being led by the North Yorkshire Coast Community Partnership - will involve local people in tackling local challenges, such as improving the environment, reducing crime and increasing job opportunities.

Following close consultation with residents, a My Barrowcliff action plan has now been given go ahead and, over the next five years, will steer a number of physical, environmental and social changes on the estate.

Set to benefit the estate’s 3,000 residents, the action plans focuses on seven key areas, including health and wellbeing, local facilities and traffic and transport. Among the first improvements are the development of an outdoor gym and play area at Gallows Close and the installation of CCTV cameras at Colescliffe Road shops.

The project brings together a number of organisations - including Groundwork North Yorkshire, Sanctuary Group, Scarborough Borough Council, North Yorkshire County Council, Yorkshire Coast Homes and the Safer Communities Partnership.

Over the next five years, the ideas highlighted in the action plan will be developed by members of the public with the support of local partners.

Tom Mutton, programme manager for Groundwork North Yorkshire, said: “The action plan is an ambitious and wide-ranging document that is the result of a lot of hard work from many local people.

“Now that the plan is published the exciting part of implementing the improvements begins and I am looking forward to working with the people of Barrowcliff to turn these ideas into reality.”

John Hanson, regional director for Sanctuary – which has invested £50,000 in the production of the action plan – added: “My Barrowcliff is all about improving the quality of life for residents, with some exciting improvements starting over the next few months.

“This is a long-term commitment for all of the partners involved and for the local community – there’s no doubt that by working together we can make a real difference. We look forward to seeing the project take pace over the coming months and years.”
