Green light for residential development at Sheffield United’s football stadium

Sheffield Council’s planning committee has approved plans to develop brownfield land surrounding the city’s Bramall Lane stadium.

The scheme, which is designed by the football club’s retained architects Whittam Cox, will see a four-storey residential building and a ground floor Blades Superstore constructed at the Cherry Street/Shoreham Street corner.

 

The Boundary Corner development will comprise 45 flats and is part of a masterplan for the Sheffield United estate.

 

Sheffield United’s director Simon McCabe has welcomed the scheme’s approval.

 

“The corner site we are developing could fulfil a dream for some of our supporters – a chance to live at the home of football. It will also enable the club to expand the superstore into a 21st century retail outlet,” he said.

 

Fellow director Scott McCabe said: “Further development of the stadium area is a positive move to enhance income streams, ultimately supporting our plans for the key football side of the business.”

 

The proposals green light follows the installation of a state-of-the-art Desso pitch, which the club says has allowed the ground to be used for events and other activities during close seasons.

 

Whittam Cox Architects’ chief executive Ashley Turner added: “Following on from completed projects such as the Westfield Corner Stand and Copthorne Hotel, we are delighted that, working with Sheffield United, we now have council permission to further enhance what is already a superb venue.”
