Herbert T Forrest scoops Green Apple award
North West-based construction company Herbert T Forrest has won an environmental award after recycling over 30 tonnes of u-PVC window frames as part of a housing refurbishment scheme.
The firm has been awarded the Chartered Institute of Waste Management ‘Green Apple Gold Award’ after piloting an initiative to divert post-construction u-PVC window frames from landfill on a window replacement scheme for Helena Housing’s Clockface Estate in St Helens.
Over 300 properties had new windows installed and the old frames were stripped apart with the glass, metal and plastic elements all sent to specialist recycling firms.
The recycled plastic will be used in manufacturing applications, such as Enviro-Kerbs and new u-PVC profiles, with glass element being used in road paint or sand blasting media.
Commenting on the award, Neil Carroll, systems manager from Herbert T Forrest said:
“This is the first initiative of its kind in the North West and we are proud to have been given this award which acknowledges our work in this area. We will now be looking to roll the scheme out across many of the other projects we are working on.”
