New sustainable homes built in Newcastle
The first residents have moved into a new eco friendly affordable housing development in Newcastle Upon Tyne, which is designed to enhance energy efficiency.
Owned and managed by social landlord Riverside and constructed by Mansell, Cohort Place in Denton Burn provides 17 homes for both rent and ownership.
The homes, designed to enhance energy efficiency have been fitted with solar panels, increased insulation and water butts to collect rainwater. As well as being eco friendly the two and three bed properties are classed as “Lifetime Homes,” meaning that rooms can be adapted to suit changing needs.
Claire O’Shea, project manager at Riverside said: “In conjunction with ID Partnership Northern we have designed a fantastic scheme, utilising limited space, on a formerly derelict site. We are thrilled that our new tenants will benefit from living in a great area of the city, which has excellent local facilities, transport links and such a strong community spirit.”
Eddie Tribe, regional director at Mansell Construction Services commented: “We are delighted to have delivered this scheme on time to our client. We hope the quality of the design and completed scheme will now be seen as a welcome addition to their neighbourhood.”
Demand for the rented properties was high, reflected in 140 expressions of interest for just 13 properties. All properties were allocated through Your Choice Homes, the local authority service which manages social housing lettings throughout Newcastle. Half the properties were allocated using a local lettings policy meaning that priority was given to applicants local to Denton Burn.
Four two bed properties are for sale on a shared ownership basis, marketed through estate agent Rook Matthews Sayer.
