Residents to have a say over Scarborough estate
The future of the Barrowcliff Estate in Scarborough has been put in the hands of its residents, as plans to transform the area are revealed.
Through the My Barrowcliff initiative, residents are being encouraged to comment on proposals for a series of major physical, environmental and social improvements on the estate.
Led by environmental regeneration charity Groundwork North Yorkshire, the five-year project aims to improve the quality of life for residents and brings together local people and organisations. Funding for the initiative has been donated by housing and care provider Sanctuary Group, Scarborough Borough Council, Yorkshire Coast Homes and the Safer Communities Partnership.
A draft action plan, which has been drawn up by local people, is now on display at locations across the Barrowcliff Estate. Priorities include ways of tackling crime and anti-social behaviour, improving and creating facilities for young people, and providing training and work opportunities for the community.
This week sees the start of a month-long consultation process, during which residents can voice their views and help decide which ideas are taken forward.
Tom Mutton, programme manager for Groundwork North Yorkshire, said: “Barrowcliff residents continue to be the driving force behind this project so we are excited to start this next phase and open up the plan for feedback.
“Residents know the estate better than anyone and we really need their support and guidance to turn ideas into reality.”
John Hanson, regional director for Sanctuary – which manages 133 homes on the estate, added: “My Barrowcliff is a fantastic opportunity for residents to get involved in changing their neighbourhood for the better.
“The project puts local people in the driving seat and we are looking forward to working alongside the community and our partners to help shape the estate’s future.”
