Wacky racer Mike McCartan, a project manager from Kier Building Maintenance Sefton, is celebrating rallying from Sefton to Barcelona in an old banger, all in aid of the children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent.

The Wacky Rally saw Mike McCartan and friends drive through the Swiss Alps and the rolling hills of Italy before eventually arriving in the Spanish Catalan capital in a £300 ‘old banger’ - a Fiat Marea transformed into the famous underwater Thunderbird 4 – which ultimately won them the award for the race’s ‘Wackiest Car’.

The team raised around £3,000 for CLIC Sargent with the support of Kier Building Maintenance Sefton. Fundraising came through sponsorship from the building maintenance company, as well as proceedings from a dress down day and donations from suppliers, subcontractors, family and friends.

The wacky racers had many obstacles meeting them along the way. Breakdown services across the UK and the police became particularly familiar with the Thunderbird and the team and questioned them about their strange vehicle. However, all this was greeted with good humour as they were spurred on by the fantastic encouragement from supporters.

McCartan said: “The trip was incredible. We saw many parts of the world and had lots of fun at the same time. We also met some fantastic people doing the trip, all for some really good causes. We’d like to thank everyone who donated and look forward to taking part next year.”
