Shian unveil Narrowboat development

Shian Housing Association has opened its first new development for 10 years.

Started in December 2008, the Narrowboat Scheme comprises 30 homes available for social and intermediate rent for local residents, two of which are adapted to wheelchair standard.

The scheme, built on the site of the former Narrowboat Pub in Haringey, has been developed for Shian by Sanctuary Group through an arrangement which forms part of an innovative development consortium.

Established by Sanctuary, the consortium allows smaller housing associations to draw on the skills and support of Sanctuary’s experienced development team, providing them with the opportunity to develop much-needed affordable accommodation.

Councillor Claire Kober, leader of Haringey Council said: “This is an exciting new development in a great setting. There is big demand for affordable housing in the borough and it’s really fantastic when schemes like this are completed. Here we have good quality affordable accommodation that anyone would be proud to live in. I am also very pleased that two of the properties are already adapted for wheelchair users meaning there need be no delay to the prospective tenants moving in.”

Councillor Kober marked the opening of the development with a ribbon-cutting ceremony before guests were taken on a guided tour.

Terry Rocque, vice-chair of Shian said: "The spirit of partnership working between Shian and Sanctuary has transformed this site into picturesque accommodation for some 30 families in the local community and we are delighted with the result.”

Vijay Asi, managing director of Asra Midlands, a member of Sanctuary Group, added: “Sanctuary is delighted to be able to help Shian achieve its objective to provide more affordable homes to local residents, and we hope it will be the first of many projects together.”
