Work begins on Lightmoor Extra Care Scheme
After a lengthy, competitive tendering process, work has started on the Lightmoor Village Extra Care scheme in Telford, Shropshire.
The scheme itself forms part of the wider initiative, being led by Bournville Village Trust, in partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to create a sustainable community.
Having successfully secured grant funding from the HCA and Telford and Wrekin Council, Bournville Village Trust has awarded the building contract to Worcester-based building contractors, Thomas Vale.
The scheme will offer 59 self contained apartments and a range of high-class community facilities including a bistro, hair salon, gym, craft room, communal lounge and fully landscaped gardens.
In keeping with the ethos of Lightmoor, the Extra Care Scheme has been designed by Bournville Architects to offer specialist housing for older and disabled people as an alternative to residential care.
Commenting on the Extra Care Scheme, Kevin Whitby, head of Shropshire Housing & Development at Bournville Village Trust said: “This unique opportunity has enabled Bournville Village Trust to build its first ever Extra Care Scheme in partnership with Telford and Wrekin Council and the HCA and we look forward to working closely with Thomas Vale during the coming year.”
Adopting the same style of modern construction as the rest of Lightmoor Village, it is envisaged that despite its large size, the scheme will look more like a cluster of individual houses.
Clare Hassam from Bournville Architects said: “The design provides a private landscaped courtyard which contrasts with the hard edge applied to the street creating a meandering oasis for residents to enjoy.”
The £10.3 million construction, which will bring investment and local employment opportunities to Lightmoor and will be actively supported by Thomas Vale’s apprenticeship and training programme, is expected to be completed in July 2011.
Glen Schofield, divisional director of Thomas Vale added: “As a local, Midlands- based contractor, Thomas Vale is extremely proud to be working in partnership with Bournville Village Trust to deliver what we believe will be an outstanding facility for Lightmoor and the surrounding area.
“The modern, innovative centre will provide a one stop shop where older people can live stimulating lives and have care provided whenever needed.”
