Wrekin Housing Trust uses new technology to reduce bills

To help reduce energy bills and increase the use of sustainable power, the Wrekin Housing Trust is investing in new technology at one of its latest housing developments.

The Trust, which is Shropshire's largest landlord with over 11,000 properties, has installed ground source heat pumps at its latest development in the village of Childs Ercall.

The Trust has worked with E.ON, one of the UK's leading power and gas suppliers, and heat pump specialists Calorex to install the new technology. Ground source heat pumps work by taking low-grade solar energy that has been absorbed by the ground and converting it into energy that can be used for hot water and central heating. It is estimated that the use of ground source heat pumps will reduce energy bills by 30-40 per cent.

Gary Komora, building services manager at The Wrekin Housing Trust, said:

"By working with E.ON and Calorex we have been able to install the ground source heat pumps in some of our new homes, which will enable us to assess first hand what impact they can have on heating bills.

“The technology being used will benefit our tenants whilst helping us do our bit to reduce carbon emissions and the reliance on gas and oil. This development will be the first of many to use ground source heat pumps."
